Several months ago, I cancelled my cable TV subscription and opted for Internet only. I haven’t really missed it at all. I’m a Netflix subscriber and watch many movies and TV shows through their Instant Watch streaming service. I can stream Netflix online directly to my TV via an attached Blu-ray player that is Internet-enabled.

The downside to not having cable is missing out on the news, sports, or live television. I was going to regret not being able to watch the Panthers football games this year, for example. So I went to Walmart (of all places) and bought a $25 Philips Indoor HD antenna. I’d give it a try to see if I could pick up any local channels over the airwaves.

The results were staggering. My TV scanned and identified 17 channels that are being broadcast over the air for free. I was stunned at the sheer number of channels. I now get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, Retro, LiveWell, and several others.

The best part is that the picture is in high definition and crystal clear. Long gone are the days of images of static and snow using rabbit ears and aluminum foil. With the switch to digital, as long as you can receive the signal, you get full resolution. I’ve even watched during thunderstorms and didn’t see any degradation in the picture quality.

I have no desire to pay for cable or satellite again. I can get everything I want over the air for free. I admit that I do love the original series on HBO and Showtime, but I rent them from Netflix. I am very satisfied without having to pay a bloated cable bill each month.

It’s worth mentioning that you cannot easily record the TV shows that are coming through the antenna, but I don’t miss that anyway. When I had a DVR, shows were constantly piling up, and the whole experience of trying to catch up began to feel like a part-time job. If recording isn’t important to you, I’d throw down twenty bucks on an antenna and see how many channels you can get in your area. You might be surprised.

I have to say that I have never cared for television shows that are centered around the setting of a hospital. I admit that at times these shows can be very moving, however, I generally find them to be depressing.

There have been countless hospital dramas on TV over the years. Think: St. Elsewhere, ER, House, General Hospital, Scrubs, Chicago Hope, Grey’s Anatomy, and others. Scrubs, with its particular brand of humor, is the only such show that I have been able to tolerate over the years.

I simply find that having a television signal beamed into your home that portrays someone in a hospital bed, muttering their final words, to be depressing to say the least. Let’s face it, nobody likes being at the hospital, whether you are a patient, or a visitor. A hospital is a place with a distinctly negative vibe.

The notion of willingly piping such emotional drama into your home seems ridiculous to me. I personally don’t care to watch the unfolding drama of a sick person in a bed. I don’t want to see it. It’s a downer. I’m not willing to subscribe to shows that are downers by default, period!

In the process, I stumbled upon what could be the best kept secret in music television. If you’re channel lineup includes Palladia HD, you’re in for a treat. If you love music and live concerts as much as I do, you’ll want to record Palladia HD. Until actively seeking HD channels, I’d never seen or heard of it. I don’t think that it exists it in my lineup of standard-definition channels. They really need to advertise this more. So far, we’ve already recorded four performances. The selections and video quality are stunning!

After many long months of watching rented DVDs of the entire three-season run of the TV show Arrested Development, I am here to write my review. As you may have previously read, a movie is rumored to be in the works. Despite my excitement about such a prospect, I’m not here to discuss that now.

The TV show Arrested Development aired on the Fox network from 2003-2006. I had never heard of it until last summer when my brother told me about it. I watched every single episode from the pilot to the finale. It is a great show. We had a great time watching it. We shared many laughs watching this series. The magic of the show lies squarely in the cast. The casting for the show is spot-on. I often remark that the only actors who could successfully pull off the lines in this show are the people who were hired to do just that.

On a slightly negative note, I must say that the third season was not nearly as good as the first two. Watching the third (and final) season was bordering on painful at times. The plot was all over the place, and often strayed into some pretty ridiculous scenarios. It felt as though a new production staff had taken over the entire operation of Arrested Development. I don’t know what happened during the last season, but there was clearly a lack of direction for any future for the show. This was made even more apparent in that the characters often mocked the show itself during the final few episodes.

Despite that bit of negativity, the rocky third season should not deter anyone from enjoying this incredibly funny TV series. I recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor. As for myself, having completed the entire series, I’ll surely miss watching the misadventures of the Bluth family.

A couple of months back, my brother turned me on to a hilarious TV show called Arrested Development. It aired on Fox for three seasons from 2003-2006, when it was then canceled by the network. I had heard of the title in the past, but had no idea what the show was actually like. So I started renting the DVDs from Netflix, starting from the very beginning. Today, I have almost finished watching the entire first season. The show is very funny! It is a character show, and getting familiar with the cast and characters are essential to your enjoyment. You’ll find that the casting for each character is just perfect. If you want to check out the show, plan to watch four to five episodes before you get a true understanding of each character. Once you’re hooked, you’ll fall in love with this show’s humor and crazy whit!

It’s a shame that this show was ultimately canceled by Fox. However, according to Internet rumors, an Arrested Development movie is due out sometime in 2009! I haven’t been able to find a release date or finalized plot details, but IMDB already has a page for this future movie, which I assume is still in the making. What fun! I look forward to it!

I’ve been watching the Beijing Olympics this weekend. In years past, I have only mustered a passing interest in the Games. With all of the hype surrounding the 2008 Games in China this year, I decided to tune in this time around. On Friday, the opening ceremony was nothing short of spectacular.

I’ll quote Roger Ebert from an article in the Chicago Sun-Times (Chicago is bidding for the 2016 Games). Ebert writes, “I think I received the intended message: China is here, big time. The scope, precision and beauty of the production were, you will agree, astonishing.”

I’ve been home most of the weekend, and I’ve had NBC on in the background. Surprisingly, I’ve actually found myself sitting and watching a lot of the events. I’ve seen swimming, rowing, beach volleyball, biking, and gymnastics. This isn’t like me, normally, but I’m genuinely enjoying myself.

I love the new Showtime series Californication. Okay, so it’s not that new, since season two is slated to start airing later this summer. I rented the DVDs for Season One via Netflix. We watched all of the episodes and we both really got into it. It stars David Duchovny. He is an absolute hoot playing the character of Hank Moody. He seems such a natural in his role. It’s really fun to watch, and it always leaves you wanting more.

In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the old HBO series Dream On, which I liked to watch in the early 90s. Just like Martin Tupper from Dream On, Hank Moody in Californication gets more T&A than you can believe! The cast, plot, dialogue, and gritty nature of this show blend together fabulously. I’m going to have to sign back up for Showtime once this show and Dexter start their new seasons!

It’s on the Discovery Health Channel. It’s a totally different kind of cooking show. Sam is a very casual, laid back guy who cooks out of his own house. He pokes fun at the typical TV food show, and is not your conventional host. Most importantly, this show introduces new ways of cooking very simple dishes, in both a healthy and easy way. Almost all of the foods that Sam cooks are ones that I’d certainly try at home on my own. This guy doesn’t talk over your head, or try to impress you with fancy dishes. He’s just a regular guy showing you simple ways to cook your own meals and manage your food. Check it out sometime!

Lately, I have noticed a sharp rise in an already very disturbing trend. When I watch TV, I am constantly interrupted with beeps, scrolls, and various alerts. I’m paying a lot of money for my digital cable service, and I don’t want the picture shrunk while half the screen has warnings on it. Why not make a whole channel for this stuff, or do it during the commercials?

In the past couple of weeks, nearly every prime time show that I’ve taped on my DVR either has had a thunderstorm warning, amber alert, silver alert, or local election results on the screen during the show. It is ridiculous! I don’t care about any of those things! If I want live election results, I don’t expect to find them on the channel showing American Idol. If a bad thunderstorm is coming, then too bad. What do you want me to do? I’m already at home! If a child or old person has gone missing, then I probably can’t help you. The person you are looking for is not standing in middle of my living room, so I suppose I won’t be seeing them tonight.

I think I’m at the front of this complaint. I believe the voices against this will grow louder once it becomes more commonplace and obtrusive. This must stop immediately! It makes me feel like every channel is going to go the way of the TV Guide Channel, which today has about 1/4 of the screen still reserved for the program listings, while the other 3/4 are ads and pointless programming. Gimme a break!

If you follow the news, you’ll probably know that the Writers Guild of America is on strike while trying to renegotiate new terms with the entertainment industry. I don’t have an opinion on the strike, but I was struck by a news article I just read. It said that this past weekend, the cast of Saturday Night Live put on a mock live show for a small audience, while a rerun played on NBC TV. I found this to be very puzzling. I mean, did anyone else think that a writer’s strike could affect SNL? Those people may want to think about going back to work before audiences stop and realize how repetitive and not funny SNL has become.

Have you seen this terrible reality show on the Sci-Fi channel? It is so lame it makes me cringe in embarrassment for the people on there. This show is a cheesy low-budget reality elimination show where a group of losers compete to be the next superhero. They dress in ridiculous outfits and spout lame taglines as they complete seemingly ordinary tasks that are presented on TV with an overlay of grade school quality special effects. The show is hosted by 85 year-old Stan Lee, who communicates with the hereos in their warehouse “lair”. It boggles the mind, but the contestants actually behave as though there is some real prize to be won or that they are actually going to become a true superhero. The lamest of the contestants is this chubby lady dressed in a maid outfit, complete with hanging feather dusters from her belt, who calls herself Hygenea.

In doing a quick bit of research for this post, I found a message board on the Sci-Fi Channel website where fans post messages about the show. I am in awe of the absurdity of their comments. Viewers write of holding their loved ones on the couch while watching the superheros compete, wiping back tears, and feeling overwhelming emotion at what they are watching. They then sign their posts with a photo of themselves in costume, complete with an ID card for their personal superhero character. Are these people serious?!

Let me be clear that I don’t watch this show! I just saw an episode on this week and ended up watching it play out in utter disbelief to what the reality show scene has become. I feel so embarrassed for these people! This show belongs on Comedy Central, not on Sci-Fi — if it has a place on TV at all. The grand prize should be a gun that they can off themselves with when the show is over.

Yesterday, I canceled Showtime on my cable lineup. We used to have HBO at home, but changed over to Showtime after some of their great original series shows were not renewed, like Six Feet Under. But since having Showtime, I realize that the premium movie channels are all the same. These days you get like 10 channels when you sign up for a paid movie network. You think you have so many options, but in reality it is the same two dozen movies playing on repeat. I often scroll ahead in the week and check out the movies that are going to air so I can record them. I see the same titles week after week, with only a few new surprises now and again. So I dropped Showtime and will use Netflix exclusively. For the price, you can’t beat it. I’ll miss seeing some of Showtime’s original series shows, but I’ll wait until they are released on DVD and then rent those from Netflix. Brilliant!

There are too many hospital shows on TV. Do you agree? I thought this years ago. I am tired of this genre of television show. People love Grey’s Anatomy these days. I have never seen a whole episode, and don’t care to. I know that ER was a great show back in the day and they made some amazing episodes. There were countless numbers of hospital shows prior to that, though. Only just recently did I realize that the show House on Fox is yet another hospital show. I admit that Scrubs has always been amusing and I do enjoy that show. Sbrubs is pretty silly and its lack of seriousness allows me to tolerate it more than the others. Where does it end?

Have you seen the cool new show on VH-1 called Acceptable.tv? It is both a TV show and a website. On this show, short skits are featured that viewers vote for on their computers or cell phones. Shows that don’t get enough votes do not return the following week, and new ones are added. Visitors to the website can even vote for user-submitted amateur videos that could make it on the air if they garner enough popularity. So far, several of the skits have been quite funny. Regardless, I absolutely love the premise of the show, where the viewers and users are in full control of the content. It is a revolutionary idea. I hope it lasts.

I have never mentioned the TV show Family Guy in my blog before, but hey, it’s so great it goes without even saying. This show is my favorite TV show of all time. I first saw it a couple of years ago. I’d seen it on but never bothered to get to know it. What changed all that was seeing the episode in the beginning seasons where Death came to the Griffin’s. From then on, I have pretty much watched them all. The things they make references to so relate to me that I feel like the creators were in my head. It pays to know a whole lot of 80s and 90s pop culture. If not, a lot of the jokes will fly right over your head. But there is no doubt in my mind that this is the best show on TV. It is certainly my favorite. The movie is also outstanding!

I just started watching the TV show The Office. I’m talking about the American version. I’d seen it in passing while flipping channels, but had never really watched it before now. Over a month ago, I had added the DVD of the first season to my Netflix rental list, and it showed up the other day without me realizing it was coming. So I played it and thought I’d try out one episode.

Well, I ended up watching all six shows on the DVD in one sitting! I absolutely love it. The entire cast is perfect and I love the way it is shot. The play between Jim and Pam is terrific. I so wish they’d get together! I rushed the disc for season 2 to the house and I just watched the first episode. New shows air on NBC again starting February 1st. Airing now is season 3. I have barely started the second season. I guess I have some catching up to do. I will enjoy it.

I rented the New Rules DVD from Netflix and just watched it. It is a collection of all them. I love his opinions, his rants, and his delivery. This was well worth watching for me, especially considering the existence of my own hate list. The material may soon feel dated, since it is largely based on current events from 2003-2005. Regardless, this DVD is hilarious. I felt like applauding the whole time.

One of my favorite new TV shows this year is the new series Dexter on Showtime. The show stars Michael C. Hall who formally played on Six Feet Under on HBO. Dexter is very creative and original. It is definitely not your average TV drama. The writing is well crafted and the characters quickly grow on you. It takes a couple of episodes to fully get hooked on the show, but you’ll soon realize it is well worth it. This show is just terrific. It is one of the reasons that I added Showtime to my cable package. If you want to watch a twisted, gripping show that is way outside the box, you’ll find Dexter to be one of the best new programs on TV.
