What a ridiculous system. What use are the measurements if they're consistently wrong? I guess they make us think we're getting more coffee for our buck when it says 5 cups instead of 3? Makes me think of how nowadays they make size small clothes much bigger so we all don't feel like such fatasses.

I'm telling you, we need to switch to metric. A "cup" can mean lots of different things in different contexts, but 240 mL is 240 mL no matter who you are.

Wow, how true. My Keurig takes 2 scoops of coffee to yield one cup
of coffee, while my Mr. Coffee takes 2 scoops to yield 2 1/2 cups of
coffee. Go figure. That is just part of life and we will have to deal with it.

so true. figuring out the right amount of water is a black art. there's no meaningful correlation between carafe measurements and servings. to get one mug-sized serving via my auto-drip, i fill the carafe to just under 6 cups and use 2 heaping coffee scoops. i'm thinking of changing to french press anyway...

Agree.... I'm actually really frustrated about this. I'm not a fan of the current social status where everyone posts everything - i'm not on Facebook, nor twitter and try to keep my online persona as private possible - however, i do have streams that i'd like to share with family etc, but this is a no go without some form of authentication. This is a standard feature of all Flickr apps that i know of - so why apple fail to integrate it on ATV is a real let down... i'm hoping for a fix in an upcoming update, then i'll use the feature fully...and likely even buy ATV's for family for just this reason !

This was fun project for sure. Sorting, sending the off for conversion, the real fun part was editing on iMac in iMovie 11. Good app for huge upload speeds about 1M would have been nice but got it done over DSL. Glad everyone liked them and able to deliver through youtube media platform.

Strongly agree. Got my Apple TV 3 days ago. Didn't check photo capabilities. First letdown was that Picasa Web albums are a no-go. Thinking I would change to Flickr -- then discovered the no login property. This is frustrating. The ATV has a pretty good looking UI; however, my impression right now is that the experience is fairly weak.

Wow Jake, that is easy. I like your clipping mask method. I just tried it myself and it is easier than the way I had been doing it. Your basic explanation made much more sense than the tutorial you linked to. Whoever wrote that tutorial didn't do a good job of explaining it. Thanks for the tip!

adobe has an easy solution to rounded corners: Illustrator. hehe.

i use a clipping mask to create those rounded corners. very easy: just draw a rounded rectangle, then move it below your photo layer. then right-click the photo layer and choose "Create clipping mask." done!

to add multiple layers to be clipped, just put the new layer on top, then right-click and choose "Create clipping mask." here's a tutorial:

If people know how to run this, I am trying to start a chat room on an irc server that people can connect to using Comic Chat and reminisce, if you will, haha. If one is using Win 7, there are steps here: http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Package-Accelerator-for-97080d2c on how to get it started and this is the server settings I used here: http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/2508/connecttocchat.png for hopefully starting a Comic Chat room again. Haha, I'm a nub at this stuff, but I figured it's worth a try..

I'm thrilled to report that today Google has released an updated version of the Google Voice app for iPhone. The new version released is v1.2.0.1285. Support for landscape view and landscape text composition has now been added. This is a small step, but I'm happy to see Google continuing, however slowly, to develop and support the Voice iPhone app. I applaud the effort.

I agree with most of what Craig is saying. Too many narcicistic people in our society see these animals as mere nuisances instead of what they really are, beautiful wildlife. Sure most people like to go outside to see the wildlife when it's convenient for them, but when the animals are forced (by us) into our own backyards, then they become problems that need to be dealt with? Shame on anyone who is so self-centered. If you don't like the idea of sharing the land with the animals that have the same right (perhaps more right) to be on that particular piece of property than you do, then stay out of the suburbs! Live in the middle of a busy city, on the 28th floor of a high-rise building, then you won't have anymore 'scary animals' in your backyard. We intrude on, and demolish the land that these animals call home just so we can open another business that likely will ultimately fail in our spiraling economy anyway. We keep expanding our cities and condensing the available area that these animals can inhabit, where are they suppose to go?
I have agreed with Craig for years that there are too many people. Now before you assume that I am some sort of backwoods "dag nabbit" kind of guy, pick up any Geography text, or take a look at the U.S. census comparing 1950 to 2009. Due to the increased birth rate and a decreased death rate, the U.S. population is increasing by roughly 12 million every year, and since we aren't making anymore land these days, all of these people need someplace to go. So we continue to move further and further into the places that these animals rely on for habitat, then complain about them being there?
I disagree with Craig's claim about hunters lacking morality. Granted there are a great many people out there who do kill animals immorally, and they couldn't even give you a good argument for why they are killing the animals, but those people are not hunters, those are idiots. True hunters like myself, harvest animals for the greater good of the species. None of us want to see these animals starved due to over-population or hit by cars to suffer on the roadside. Furthermore, hunters are people who ETHICALLY harvest only the appropriate number of these animals, which is directed by the Department of Natural Resources/State Wildlife Committees, as it is the aim of these departments to keep herds healthy through practices such as population control.
We, as hunters, and other wildlife advocates enjoy having these animals around, and we enjoy getting out in nature with them. Personally, I have a large heart for all animals, wild or domestic, and contribute any way I can to ensure their livlihood. I truely wish there were more "pro-animal" people such as Craig and myself.

Actually, AT&T recently updated their texting plans to a (slightly) more reasonable $10 for 1000 SMS or $20 for unlimited. They got rid of their $5 for 200 tier, which is what I used to use until I got a Google Voice number and finally cancelled my SMS plan altogether (using an iPhone). I think it's ridiculous that SMS is considered separate from data as it is. I refuse to give them any more money after their $30 a month for data.

You won't quit. There are too many things in your head for you to quit. Snark and wit will always find a way out, even if it means writing on your arms. Not that I know that one from experience or anything. Because I don't. Nope. Not at all. Um. Look over there! A distraction!

I remember watching a news report a long ways back about kids who invent things (as part of a scholarship/science fair type deal), and one kid invented an alarm clock that was attached to your bed so that when it went off in the morning, one side of your bed would gradually lift until, eventually, it was at a 45d angle. It was pretty much physically impossible to stay in the bed, thus forcing you to get up. He made his sister the guinea pig for this experiment (poor girl; I would have ripped it to shreds after the first try), and from what I remember it worked pretty well. I am super thankful it was never marketed, making it impossible for my parents to buy one for me.

If I might add a pet peeve to this list: talking. I don't want to talk to you while I'm using the restroom. I don't need to talk about how long the day has been, how ready you are to head home, the effect your lunch had on your intestinal tract or anything else. Enter, do your business and be on your way.

Craig, I remember you and Chris playing that game for hours. I just tried to play and
I don't know how the two of you could concentrate so long on the screen without
pictures to keep you interested. My hat is off to both of you.
I didn't know how smart you both were as children.

I was showing a coworker an android app that lets me play z-code based IF. I went on and on about how awesome gaming using only your imagination was. They were unimpressed.

Since writing this article about the Google Voice app, I have discovered a small fly in the ointment. If you are using the Google Voice service for text messages, you cannot receive MMS (multimedia text messages).

Last night I was sent a MMS text message (text and photo) to my Google Voice number, and I received nothing. I didn't get the text portion of the message, nor was I informed that I had even been contacted. In the future, I would like to see Google send a notification that I had been contacted, but that the message could not be delivered.

I don't really mind this limitation, as I don't ever do MMS messaging. If I want to send a photo, I'll put it in an email. But if you happen to use it, or know someone who uses MMS regularly, then Google Voice is not a good solution for you.

This is a great idea, though you still have to apply the label and archive the message when it arrives in your inbox. Here's how I get around that.

First add a contact in your addy book with the email address yourname+journal@gmail.com (I don't want to put your real address here, so just interpret that to mean you should add "+journal" after the first part of your email address. Gmail will always ignore the part after the plus sign so the message will get sent to your normal inbox.

Call this contact Journal. That way you can create and address an email to yourself quickly. Hit Compose, start typing Journal, then tab to the message body.

Then go into Gmail and create a filter matching the yourname+journal@gmail.com address. Make it automatically add the Journal label, mark read, and archive the message.

Quick and easy journal in one step!

I have filters and labels for this called "reference" and "self". "Self" is a note to myself (duh) and Reference is anything I think I might want to look up later on. Journal is a great addition that I might just copy!

I could care less about commas in your hate list. Doesn't bother me if you have a few or way to many. I just read the hate list for the pure fun of reading it and the laughter it bring to everyone.

You, go, Craig, use, as, many, as, you, like, we, will, still, enjoy, anything, you, write,

I have a solution: make up the lyrics. You will probably find your invented lyrics to be more meaningful if not just all around better than the originals. You could seriously write a song in the time it takes to search lyrics online with a phone.

Twitter provides an RSS feed of your favorites. I subscribe to my own Favorite feed in Google Reader. This means I can use the star this to mark tweets that I want to check out later on my PC. They automatically come back into my RSS stream a few hours after I mark them, which is perfect timing because by then I'm usually back on the desktop computer. Nice!

Ironically, I usually star those in Google Reader because I want to check them out even *later* when I'm not just browsing through RSS feeds. Twitter to Favorites to Google Reader to Starred Items. It's a long way to go for some video of a frog or whatever that sounds interesting!

I decided to pay the $5.99 fee to remove ads from the app for one year. It is totally worth it. The app is by far much snappier to respond without having to download ad content along with your messages. If you use this app, you should surely pay the $6.

Works great for TV shows on my iPhone 3G, but I can't watch anything over 45 minutes in length. If I do, the video freezes after 3 seconds, and eventually drops back to the menu. It happens on wifi and 3G. Crazy. I tweeted @netflixhelps about it but they aren't really all that helpful yet.

I didn't directly address this in my article, but normal text messages have a 160-character limit. Perhaps Twitter should simply boost the limit to that amount. It would only give users 20 more characters, but every little bit helps when you're trying to squeeze a long thought in a tight space.

I installed 4.0 on my 3G a few days ago using the developer seed, and installation time was about what I am used to. A full backup of my device takes a good long time anyway.

After the install, I jailbreaked the device to enable the missing features like multitasking and wallpaper. I can tell you that the overall performance decrease from having multitasking and wallpapers enabled on the 3G was seriously not worth it. IMHO, Apple was correct not to support these features on the older hardware.

Apps that have been updated to use multitasking in iOS 4 tend to load in about 3-4 seconds on the 3G with multitasking enabled, which is not much better than the normal load behavior with multitasking turned off. For apps that aren't updated yet, the extra memory requirements of multitasking resulted boot times of 10-15 seconds or more, and noticeable delays in the keyboard response, springboard scrolling, taking a photo, etc. It was painful, so when I installed the final 4.0 release yesterday, I did not apply the jailbreak and things feel much snappier.

That said, I will definitely on the lookout for a discarded, cheap 3GS later this week. I have tasted multitasking and I liked it.

I, as you know, had a Jersey Mikes club sub on Tuesday with bacon. Pretty good; but then again, look at my recent list of competitors. Interestingly enough, even I have found Wendy's bacon questionable. I think there is something to be said about a soggy, lard looking strip laid across my burger; not appetizing. Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers have not been consumed in months.

My iPhone handles bluetooth connections much more easily than my old Razr phone. However, I should have added in my post that enabling bluetooth on my iPhone has made a noticeable dent in my overall battery life! Very noticeable!

Fav4.org looks nice all right. But in practice I think it is to simple. Four links - you might as well make have them as link buttons on your bookmark toolbar. I like zenstart -
it has a search box and the top 150 links:
<a href="http://www.zenstart.com" rel="nofollow">www.zenstart.com</a>

It's true, ads will adjust to the new technology, and the effort to fight annoying ads will have to evolve just like the ads themselves, the same as the case as with antivirus software and viruses today. I think the mere existence of a browser plug-in that blocks a particular technology entirely goes to show just how misused and abused Flash was. Hopefully there'll be something else that evolves to stop the HTML 5 ads from taking over our browsers. Plus I'll take any open format over a proprietary one.

after years of contortions attempting to make standards-based development work as expected (or at all) across browsers/versions/platforms, i hold no hopes that HTML 5 will perform consistently across user agents. especially since relevant portions of the HTML 5 specification are years away from ratification, much less adoption. i'm not a fan of Flash apps that break the browser navigation paradigm, and those hyper-annoying (usually movie) websites that are all flashy (sorry) transition effects burying the content.

aside from Photoshop, i'm no fan of Adobe. but, like it or not, Flash has evolved as a de facto standard. (i looked up "de facto" btw.) Flash will always outpace HTML in feature set. (reread that sentence, please.) and i like that my Flash app/rectangle will work as expected, regardless of user agent. that's the whole point.

then there's the overwhelming amount of current Flash content i view every day. (this has nothing to do with porn. no it doesn't.) i've tried Flash blockers, but i got tired of manually enabling Flash practically everywhere! i want to block ads, not Flash generically.

i love standards and code to them. but, IMHO, currently, and for the foreseeable future, Flash plugs some enormous functionality holes in HTML's very underconstructed dam. (is that a mixed metaphor?) also consider how easy HTML 5 will make it for the average schmoe to create annoying Flash-like ads. as craig mentioned, what does that spawn? HTML 5 media blockers. oh yeah...

I see what you mean, Kevin. One of the complaints about Flash is when someone has many browser tabs open and suddenly one of them randomly starts talking or running some Flash ad. I see your point there, but don't you think the next standard will be abused the same way? I can't imagine an HTML5 "blocker"!

I'll agree Flash isn't as horrible as it once was. Still, Flashblock is one of the first add-ons I install on a fresh version of Firefox. Well before it was used for actual creative and entertaining content, Flash was used as a way for ads to get around pop up blocking and in general be a nuisance. It has gotten better, and I agree that the iPad and iPhone are sorely lacking without Flash support. But I say death in a fire can't come quickly enough to Flash. It does hog my resources, or can, and more than that, it's too prevalent a technology on the web for it to be so proprietary. I'm ready for HTML 5 to come along and eat Flash's lunch. Flash came to such prominence because of its power and the lack of that power with traditional standards. Now that there's an open standard for that, Flash's days are numbered...or at least I hope so.

I did a little research into the 3,200 tweet backup limitation. I copied the following text from Twitter's API Wiki:

<em>Clients may request up to 3,200 statuses via the page and count parameters for timeline REST API methods. Requests for more than the limit will result in a reply with a status code of 200 and an empty result in the format requested. Twitter still maintains a database of all the tweets sent by a user. However, to ensure performance of the site, this artificial limit is temporarily in place.</em>

[jake really like the last one!]

<b>You might be from Arizona if...</b>

* You think someone driving wearing oven mitts is clever.
* You buy salsa by the gallon.
* You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
* Your Christmas decorations include a half a yard of sand and 100 paper bags.
* You think a red light is merely a suggestion.
* All of your out-of-state friends start to visit after October but clear out come the end of April.
* Most of the restaurants in your town have the first name "El" or "Los". (Or they end in "-bertos": Hilbertos, Filiberto's, Eribertos, Izberto's, Alberto's...)
* You think six tons of crushed rock makes a beautiful yard.
* You've signed so many petitions to recall governors that you can't remember the name of the incumbent.
* You notice your car overheating before you drive it.
* Your house is made of stucco and has a red clay tile roof.
* You can say Hohokam and people don't think you're laughing funny.
* You no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water.
* You see more irrigation water on the street than there is in the Salt River.
* You know a swamp cooler is not a happy hour drink.
* You can say 115 degrees without fainting.
* Every other vehicle is a 4X4
* You can be in the snow, then drive for an hour and it will be over 100 degrees.
* Vehicles with open windows have the right-of-way in the summer.
* You have to go to a fake beach for some fake waves.
* People break out coats when temperature drops below 70.
* You discover, in July, it only takes two fingers to drive your car.
* The pool can be warmer than you are.
* You can make sun tea instantly.
* People will drive over a hundred miles just to see snow.
* You run your air conditioner in the middle of winter so you can use your fireplace.
* Most people will not drink tap water unless they are under dire conditions.
* Most homes have more firearms then people.
* People who have black cars or black upholstery in their car are automatically assumed to be nuts or from out-of-state.
* The AC is on your list of best friends.
* Monday Night Football starts at 7:00 instead of 9:00.
* You realize that Valley Fever isn't a disco dance.
* You can finish a Big Gulp in 10 minutes and go back for seconds.
* You can (correctly) pronounce the words: "Saguaro", "Tempe", "Gila Bend", "San Xavier", "Canyon de Chelly", "Mogollon Rim", "Cholla", and "Ajo".
* It's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and not one person is moving on the streets.
* You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
* Sun screen is sold year round, kept at the front of the checkout counter, a formula less than 30 spf is a joke, and you wear it just to go to Circle K.

* Hot air balloons can't go up, because the air outside is hotter than the air inside.
* No one would dream of putting vinyl upholstery in a car.

I should also mention that if a particular album cover that you want isn't available via iTunes, a great search engine for album artwork can be found at: http://www.albumart.org/

Each cover appears to link to Amazon for the actual artwork, but it makes the search a lot more simple.

I should also mention that if you visit Digg.com in the Safari browser in the iPod/iPhone, it takes you directly to the Digg mobile page (m.digg.com). From there, you can read Digg stories and comments, as well as click to Digg the stories (if logged in). Considering the mobile web-based app, the actual Diggle app may not be necessary at all!
